We’re excited to announce that the merge of RSS3, RSSHub, Open Information Initiative, and several other crucial technical modules have joined forces to create Open.
This merger goes beyond a technical integration. Open, as a collective endeavor, is accelerating the course of an Open Web where users, developers, and contributors can benefit from an open ecosystem that values scalability, interoperability, and transparency.
Why Open?
Over the past years, we have witnessed the ups and downs alongside the growth of decentralized technologies. While making great progress, we came to realize that the world isn’t building an Open Web fast enough.
The Web is about information and compute. And while there has been a tremendous amount of both, misalignments caused by centralization, censorship, and isolation have deeply slowed down the efficiency of the Internet, and furthermore, the whole society.
The lack of an Open Web suffocates humanity, and much more than technology is needed to fix it.
Open is poised to offer significant Open Web infrastructures, foster an ecosystem of Open Web applications, and collectively push the Open Web movement.
Open’s Technical Evolution: Enhancing Value for Developers and Communities
Open is designed to provide information abstraction and compute abstraction to empower a range of new use cases and benefits for our community members.
- Information Abstraction: Expanding Data Accessibility for All
Open’s information abstraction, derived from RSSHub and RSS3, reduces data acquisition complexity by over 90%. It empowers applications to seamlessly access data from across Web1, Web2, and Web3.
With this capability, communities and developers can now harness data from decentralized sources and open protocols like RSS, ActivityPub, and Bluesky, alongside major content platforms like Youtube and Telegram, helping open applications achieve scale and usability on par with and superseding closed applications.
Open will serve as a crucial information bridge, connecting data sources across the web continuum. This ensures that developers can build applications with richer, more diverse data, enabling new possibilities from platformless media, to transparent AI models.
- Compute Abstraction: Unlocking High-Performance Compute
Open’s compute abstraction is achieved via Open Virtual Machine (OVM).
In today’s data-hungry world, communities rely on compute power to unlock new opportunities for AI, scientific modeling, advanced defi strategies, and beyond. Blockchain-based computation is typically limited in scope, but OVM introduces verifiable, high-performance computation that bridges this gap, without sacrificing security.
By connecting decentralized compute to Open’s infrastructure, grassroots-driven projects can access computational power for complex tasks, such as LLM training, physical simulations, and financial strategizing, all while maintaining transparency. This positions Open to support a new wave of decentralized applications that require high-powered computing, transforming what’s possible for developers building in the space.
OVM will be tailor fitted and deployed to different target blockchains, bringing off-chain high performance compute to different communities and ecosystems.
Key Benefits for the Open Ecosystem
The Open merger introduces several unique advantages for communities, developers, and contributors invested in building a decentralized web.
- Broader Economic Opportunities: Open will provide a more diversified platform where contributions, content, and innovation are recognized through incentivized systems. Through Open’s expanded access to data sources and compute, developers and creators gain new ways to build sustainable, community-driven applications that rival traditional platforms in both scope and monetization potential.
- Stronger Community Synergies: By consolidating RSS3’s Web3 strengths with RSSHub’s expansive data reach, Open brings together an even larger, more engaged user base. This alignment allows projects to flourish with cross-community collaboration, as Open facilitates seamless access to a vast array of open data resources, fostering an environment where developers can innovate and thrive together.
- Enhanced Transparency and Decentralization: Open introduces a decentralized approach to data and computation that ensures verifiability and transparency at every stage. By aligning contributors and data providers under a decentralized framework, Open strengthens trust and resilience across the ecosystem, giving communities more confidence in their projects and the sustainability of decentralized applications.
A New Era of Incentivized, Open Development
Through the Open Initiative, we’re championing the technical evolution of Open and also offering social and financial support needed to ensure that communities and developers thrive. This initiative will fund and support community-led projects, build awareness around the value of open access, and encourage collaboration across sectors. Partners like Google are joining us on this mission, bringing scalable resources that ensure Open’s infrastructure can support a vast ecosystem of applications.
The Open Initiative will focus on delivering long-term economic value and growth for the decentralized community, providing a foundation for innovation across the ecosystem.
Onwards, Building the Future of an Open Web
The Open merger is an important milestone for many open and decentralized ecosystems, unlocking a new era of possibility for communities, developers, and builders. With Open, we’re building a scalable, transparent infrastructure that serves a truly decentralized vision of the web. Parts of Open are already live, and the next steps will see Open evolve with continued support from contributors and partners across the ecosystem.
Together, we accelerate the course of the Open Web.
